Tell us a bit about yourself

I'm Sam, also known as Eyes, a 20 year old producer/songwriter fromnear Brighton! Music is pretty much all I do, wouldn't have it any other way,other than that I'm a pretty standard 20 year old!

How did you get into DJing?

Always been a huge fan of music, started playing guitar when I wasabout 12, played in bands and eventually decided I wanted to get into producingto record my band's music. From there I just ended up getting more into the electronicside of things, remixes and stuff, and DJing was the logical choice.

What do you look for in a song you want to remix?

First thing is vocals usually, has to have a vocal that getspeople's attention. Doesn't have to be huge and in your face, could be quitesoft, just as long as it sounds nice.

What equipment do you use?

My main piece of kit is my MacBook Pro, do pretty much everythingon that. Have a few bits of kit but rarely need to use much else. Having massesand masses of plugins helps a lot though!

What are your views on music being shared and sold online?

Very difficult question, I don't think there's an option thatdoesn't have its fallbacks. I don't agree with the insane crackdown oncopyright infringement at the moment, but I wouldn't, being a remixer myself! Ibelieve it should be shared, and that people DO still pay for good music evenif they can get hold of it for free. YouTube is an awesome tool, as isSoundCloud, and iTunes seems to be a good system. It'll be interesting to seewhere that area of the industry goes over the next few years.

What is your greatest achievement?

Not sure! Either hitting 5 million hits on YouTube. Or playingMinistry of Sound was pretty insane. I had a remix on the Cher Lloyd SwaggerJagger EP which got up to number 2 in the album charts, and the single wentnumber one, so that was pretty cool.

What inspires you?

Good music, and meeting other people who are just as passionate asme about what they do, I love being surrounded by other people who love music.But in terms of actually making music, producers like Skrillex, Feed Me and theNoisia guys are a huge inspiration. Seeing Skrillex win those Grammys the otherday was very inspirational.

Best and worst gig?

I've not done that many gigs as Eyes, been spending too much timein the studio! The ones I've done so far have all been awesome fun though,Ministry was the best, couldn't say what the worst was.

You've nearly hit 2million YouTube views for your recent Ellie Goulding remix, any feedback from the good lady herself about it?

I haven't actually! I've met her a couple of times but never reallyspoke about it, might try find out what she thinks!

What have you got lined up for the future?

Loads more original stuff, some more remixes, more gigs, 2012 isexciting already. I've got a single out early March called "Tonight",going out on the Quantum label, it's featuring Ryan Keen who has been havingsome mad success recently, really talented bloke, so that's the next thing onthe agenda!

Sometimes Djs blend and mix records of the same genre Dez does nothing generic its all soul hip hop carribean latin 2 step disco breaks even transforming salsa and bossa to great effect his double of the ohio players funky worm is off the chain.

So he kills it on the turntables and its right in front of your eyes no gimmicks straight skills every selection conscious but off the top of the dome no playlist on WDEZ just relax in the safest pair of soul clapping hands in the biz, he is a natural musician providing an array of accompaniment on the congas and as a host his voice was made for radio providing his own station ids backing vocals and echo chamber he also holds down the chat room keeping his global audience entertained with free inspiration and motivation it is truly an education , he got stories to rival quentin tarantino such an intersting guy he drops knowledge and science and history a true teacher. Dez often loops up his mpc on the fly especially in his bailout series where he just goes and goes regularly for four hours but some times for 8-10 hours yes thats right some people struggle doing an hour but he just vibes relentlessly. inviting amazing guests into his basement for added flavour , i saw Dj Sicari go in just before he flew out to japan that was some show wow.

So he busts his own tracks out live just vibin but he has also just started his own imprint the beautiful La Vida label encopasses the vibe you get from Dez just great music.

The man exudes Hip Hop thats why i listen but when he takes it to the slow jams and smooth selections catering more for the ladies you cant help but love it he drops Eric Roberson Dwele Monica Blaire and Amp Fiddler and Erykah Badu over Dila time signtures . I have given up trying to id his breaks and slow jams he has the sweetest sample collection so deep. The proletariat have seized the means of production. Music production, that is.

Any halfwit with a copy of Ableton, Cubase and Reason can bang together a semi respectable track these days. A myriad of sounds, instruments and, snyths, all at your fingertips. The options have never been more varied, the price never more accessible.

So why do tracks like this and other offerings from the late 80's/ early 90's wipe the floor with today's output? Nostalgia? A meandering walk down Memory Lane? Perhaps. But I wasn't attending raves under the M42. I was 10 when this badboy came out. I might have looked older than my age (something I exploited to the full a few years later) but I didn't look that old. I only discovered these gems a few years into my conversion to House music, circa 1995 onwards.

So what is it?

A Guy Called Gerald ( Mr Gerald Simpson to his postman) described his Roland TB-30 3 bass synthesiser and the TR-808 as a sort of time machine, the idea that the beat of the drum has performed a vital role in group and tribal gatherings since the year dot. He is merely the conduit, duplicating, repeating and harnessing this ancient power.

It's an interesting concept, but where do the bleeps come into it? After much deliberation, I am of the opinion that Ron Trent, Kevin Saunderson, Marshall Jefferson and all the other early pioneers were sent here from another planet. What else could reasonably explain the gulf in class? Those bleep sounds were merely a form of communication, the opening salvo in our integration into a wider cosmos. I accept that this moment of clarity might be heavily influenced by lack of sleep and spending way too much time on David Icke's website recently, but a world run by lizard people and aliens is -quite frankly- not as scary as a world with Sarah Palin, David Cameron and Nicolas Sar Co Zeee manning the controls.

Whilst currently unemployed I've been writing my own blog about the boring and mundane activities that plague my day in search of work. I decided to do this in order to stop my life falling into the role of Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. It hasn’t worked.

So as it’s now known that I have nothing to do, I was asked if I would like to dust off my turntables, sift through my 12 inches and add a mix tape to this very blog I'm now writing on. I did have a long hard think about doing this as I haven't recorded a session on the wheels of steel for ages, however in the end I decided against it. After listening to the other mixes on the blog from very talented people I decided I wouldn't have been able to face the laughter and jeering filling the comments boxes.

Not wanting to let a mate down I have instead decided to participate in another way, and after impressing the blog owner with my spelling and overuse of long words in the wrong context. I thought a small article (or bitter rant as I prefer) on how the very art and magic of mixing has changed within the dance scene. I felt this would be more appropriate, so here it is.

My love for dance music started many decades ago, well a few anyway (I’m not an old person but unfortunately I can’t class myself as young anymore). It was around 1994 that I started to take a serious note of dance music and when I first started making ‘Mix Tapes’. The old skool style of mix tape. Not a collection of songs skilfully put together via beat matching and perfect timing but solely via the use of a tape cassette recorder, a pause button and the radio. It was basically the start of music piracy and a lot better than the ‘Now That's What I Call Music’ compilations.

Recording a selection of songs from the Top 40 didn’t last long. Having a slightly older sister, I was then introduced to the essential mix. 2 hours of non stop electronic dance music brought to your bedroom/living room/garden by some of the best DJ’s in the world. I no longer had to use the pause button. But it was this weekly radio show that had planted the tiny seed in my mind of having my own turntables, which sat alongside a dream of being the best DJ in the world.

3 years later I was the proud owner of some Soundlab belt driven turntables. I was like a kid at Christmas (which would make sense as they were a Christmas present from my parents) and a total of 4 records of which to mix together. Having progressed in those last few years from just ‘House’ music I decided my music of choice was going to be good old Drum N Bass. Within twenty minutes of messing around I had realised that the professionals were indeed a talented bunch, and making two songs sound like one progressive track was a lot more difficult than first assumed. For the following months I became very familiar with the sound of herd of elephants in the middle of an active war zone. This is known as the Beat Clash.

Moving on four years and after a heap of practising and a set of Stanton turntables later, I was a competent DJ. I had confidence in the ability and power of my ears to match two songs together. With the speed and timing right, people could just continue to dance never knowing how that magic happened. I then finally became the proud owner of my Technics SL 1210s and my Allen & Heath mixer. In my bedroom I was king.

It wasn’t long after the new wheels arriving that I finally became a ‘professional DJ’ charging bars and clubs for my services and landing a few residences on the way. These were good years I would turn up with my heavy box of records, be given some free drinks, entertain the crowds with my live mixing get paid and go home. I did also notice though that whilst the majority of people would be happy to hear and just dance to the music, there was always others who would like to watch the DJ perform. They wanted to see the DJ at work, cueing up, working the mixer and swapping records. Just like I had used to. To people into the dance music scene Mixing is an art form.

Or rather, it used to be.

I haven’t DJ’d in a bar or club for around 5 years now but when I still go out (not that it’s a lot these days to be fair, being in hard times and all that) I still like to listen to the DJ’s and the music that they’re now playing (dubstep is trying to take over the world). The thing I find sad is that a lot of the places I now go don’t have a DJ any more. They have someone on a laptop. I know that technology is always evolving but it’s also taking away the talent and the personal aspect of it. I personally was never a fan of CD decks but they still worked in a similar way to vinyl, it still required a hand on approach and an ear for the music itself.

I know that I may open myself up for a bit of stick for this article but I just find the whole idea of DJing from a computer wrong. It defeats the purpose of you actually needing to be there to supply the personal touch a lot of people still want from a DJ.

It's just far too easy to get into it these days. The programs that you can use can beat match and sync almost anything together just at the touch of a button, all the ‘DJ’ has to do is download the latest tracks via itunes, an alternative online store or dare I say it, illegally. This can even be done half way through a set when the computer is doing all the 'mixing' for you.

The reason for this rant I suppose is that without listening to and seeing the Stars of the DJing world I would not have got into it myself. I fear that now when you go out and look over at the DJ box all you will see is the illuminated Apple logo on the back of a laptop and hear the same mix you hear everywhere else you go because a computer program has done it.

I just hope I’m wrong.

Well anyway I’m glad I’ve got that off my chest. I’m now off to download some torrents and have the computer make me a mixtape for my ipod.

Something a friend of mine sent, I really like this and if it's an ongoing series it'll be worth investing the time in. I've seen Vincent a couple times, the Yardbird stands out in my head more than any other, and he really is one of the best unsigned acoustic guitar players you'll hear. My understanding is that he's no residing in Hungary, which is a shame, but should he ever be gigging in the UK again he's definitely worth your time and money.
